FIA represented at Admiral Sandy Woodward’s Memorial Service
“The Falkland Islands Association was represented by its chairman at the service of thanksgiving for the life of Admiral Sir John ‘Sandy’ Woodward GBE, KCB at Chichester Cathedral on Thursday, 14 November 2013.
The service was attended by well over 600 guests with the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, representing HM the Queen, Vice Admiral Rory McLean representing HRH the Duke of York, and Commodore Andrew Jameson RN representing HRH Prince Michael of Kent as his ADC. Sukey Cameron represented the Falkland Islands Government. The Dean of Chichester officiated and delivered a homily, with tributes also from Captain John Jacobsen RN and the Reverend David Cooper, Chaplain to 2 Para in 1982.
The Admiral’s family was in attendance: his Orders and Decorations were carried to the altar screen by two young members of the family and the reading from Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 “For everything there is a season” was done by Penny Ellis. The Falklands Hymn “We entrust to the Lord all our brothers” (music: Ralph Allwood; words: Howard Moseley) was sung as was Psalm 107: 23-31 “They that go down to the sea in ships”. It was a deeply moving service demonstrating the high regard and affection in which Sandy Woodward was held. Contributions were offered to the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel, Pangbourne.”
