Prime Minister Condemns Corbyn Over the Falkland Islands
The Prime Minister joined the widespread condemnation of Jeremy Corbyn’s comments about the Falkland Islands during the Andrew Marr show – see news item and video immediately below.
Asked by the DUP Deputy Leader, Nigel Dodds MP, during Prime Minister’s questions on 20 January to reaffirm his unequivocal support of the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination, David Cameron said that the Falkland Islanders had made it overwhelmingly clear in the 2013 referendum that they wished to remain a British Overseas Territory and that “as long as they want that, they have that guarantee from me. I find it quite extraordinary that the Labour Party now want to look at trying to change the status…That will not happen as long as I am in Downing Street.”
This will also be seen as a clear message to the new Argentine President, Mauricio Macri, who is scheduled to meet David Cameron during the World Economic Forum at Davos this week. Argentine Government representatives had made it clear beforehand that, in seeking a new broader-based relationship with the UK, they remained committed to pursuing their sovereignty claim.
