Sorrel Pompert Robertson Wins The 2018 Bill Hunter Christie Prize
The winner of this year’s Bill Hunter Christie Prize is Sorrel Pompert Robertson. This was announced at the annual general meeting of the Falkland Islands Association in London on 8 December 2018.
Sorrel, aged 21, is studying Ancient History at the University of Exeter. Last year she took part in a ‘study abroad’ programme and spent the academic year at the Saint Francis Xavier University in the town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Whilst there, she achieved the highest grades in her classes for her assignments, and was also privileged to meet the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, when he visited the university. In her second year at Exeter University, she continued her high level of achievement by gaining a 1st class grade overall.
In her extra-curricular activities this year, she is on the committee of the TravelExe Society as the Media and Publicity Secretary, an elected position. Her duties are largely to promote the society and gain new membership via social media apps. Next year, she will be joining a sponsored hike in Morocco to raise money for the Children’s Society.
The E W H Christie prize was established in memory of Bill Hunter Christie, who did much to mobilise UK public support for the Falkland Islands in the 1960’s when the UK Government was in discussion with Argentina over a possible future transfer of sovereignty. The work of the Emergency Committee led eventually to the formation of the Falkland Islands Association in London. The prize is awarded annually to a young Falkland Islander, studying abroad, who is judged to have brought most credit to the Falkland Islands during the year. The winner receives a book, or books, to the value of £100 of their choice. Unfortunately, Sorrel was not able to be in London to receive her prize on the day.
